Chrome brick is a kind of refractory product made from Chrome ore with content of Cr2O3 ≥ 30%. In order to improve its high temperature performance, it usually adds more than 10% of magnesia.

Chrome brick is neutral refractory brick with very weak effect to acidic and basic refractories at high temperatures. The load softening temperature and thermal shock resistance of Chrome Brick are lower than that of magnesia-chrome brick. Chrome Brick is mainly used for high temperature acidic and alkaline refractory barrier layer, but also for non-ferrous smelting furnace lining. But Chrome Brick is not suitable used for direct contact with the molten iron and at frequently changeable temperatures.

The chemical composition of fire clays are 23-34% Al2O3, 50-60% SiO2 and 6-27% loss on ignition together with various amounts of Fe2O3, CaO, MgO, K2O, Na2O and TiO2. Chemical analyses from two 19th-century sources, shown in table below, are somewhat lower in alumina although a more contemporary source quotes analyses that are closer.

Low porosity clay bricks take flint clinker as the main raw material with the apparent porosity of 17%. Fire clay bricks take refractory clay and flint clay clinker as the main raw material, containing 30% to 46% alumina with refractoriness 1580 ~ 1770 ℃. It is a weak acid refractory materials with good thermal shock resistance, good corrosion resistance to acidic slag. Low porosity clay bricks are widely used in steel, glass and chemical industries.

Magnesia chrome brick main component are magnesium oxide (MgO) and chromium oxide (Cr2O3) , main mineral component are periclase and spinel.

Magnesium chrome brick has high refractoriness, high temperature strength, resistance to alkaline slag erosion resistance, excellent thermal stability, also as some adaptability to acidic slag. The main raw material for manufacturing magnesium chromium brick are sintered magnesia and chromite.

Purity of magnesia raw materials need to be as high as possible, requires on chromite chemical composition: Cr2O3: 30 ~ 45%, CaO: ≤1.0 ~ 1.5%.
